Marriage and death notices from Alabama newspapers and family records, 1819-1890 / compiled by Helen S. Foley.
"The marriage and death notices compiled in this publication are not limited to Southeast Alabama, as many entries are from states and counties surrounding Barbour County, Alabama, particularly Georgia. Georgetown, in Quitman County, Georgia, across the Chattahoochee River from Eufaula, Alabama, was a very popular place for young couples to marry and it was known as the "Gretna Green" of southeast Alabama. The courthouse records of Quitman County were lost by fire in 1921. Dale County, Alabama records were lost in 1885. Much important information on families can be found in old newspapers"--Foreword, page iii.
