The spirit in Washington Square : a novel Cover Image Book Book

The spirit in Washington Square : a novel / by Mary Kay Remick.

Summary:

Dramatic changes are on the way as Belle prepares to leave the halfway house known as Hope Haven. After six months of treatment, the time has come for Belle to take charge of her life -- an exciting but scary prospect for a naive woman who has never been on her own. Exciting because she'll have the freedom to continue her search for Blanche DuBois, of "A Streetcar Named Desire," fame; scary because of her changing relationship with Art Barkoff. As for Art, Belle is the one bright spot in his otherwise dreary life. She captured his heart when, dressed in a get-up out of the '40s, she plopped herself down in his prized Checker cab and started sipping vodka from a plastic bottlle that once contained Scope mouthwash. It's been one wild ride after another ever since. Meanwhile, Belle's housemates are dreading her departure. Former addicts and sometime hookers, Belle is the one person they look up to. She is their sister, mother, and best friend. They'll still have "Mammy Daisy," their God-fearing housemother, and Marge, their no-nonsense therapist, but nothing will be the same without Belle. Then there's Belle's dysfunctional family back in Georgia -- Mandy, her estranged daughter; Edith, her domineering mother; Jesse, her hapless father, and finally Linwood Mallory III, her wealthy ex-husband.
